In the mid-1990s, Barcelona City Council decided to promote a plan to revitalize L’Eixample. It was crucial for both the public and private sectors to get involved in this process and it was therefore decided to create a mixed economy company to act as a catalyst and promoter of the revitalization of the city centre.
For these reasons, in 1996 the public limited company ProEixample was created, with public and private financial backing. The company’s scope of action falls within the framework of the strategic axes of the plan for the revitalization the L’Eixample, which are:
To improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.
To promote residential use.
To maintain centrality.
To incorporate criteria of sustainability.
In 2004, Barcelona City Council created the company Barcelona d'Infrastructures Municipals, SA (BIMSA) and transferred ownership of the shares of ProEixample, SA to this company, which groups together all the municipal investment companies. |
